NSFW (Not Safe For Work)

Posted by Paul on 19th October 2009

NSFW is a warning that people put onto blog entries or emails to let them know that the material might not be appropriate for workplace situations.

This is definitely one of those posts.

Diego Maradona, the legendary ex-player and now coach of the Argentina national team, had a press conference the other day after the team qualified to go to the World Cup tournament.

The press in the soccer-obsessed nations (which is most of the rest of the world) can be particularly brutal in some areas- and many of the South American nations are amazing with their passion. There’s been a ton of criticism of Maradona.

So his press conference started out with “you lot take it up the ass” (referring to the media) and went downhill from there…

“I also want to dedicate this to the whole of Argentina, to my family too, but there is one group who do not deserve this because they have treated me like rubbish.

“I don’t usually read the newspapers or listen to sports programmes but my daughters do and they told me what had been said about me. So, I repeat, to all those that said anything against me, keep eating your words.

“But certain people who have not supported me, and you know who you are … they can suck it and carry on sucking it.

“This is for all Argentines, minus the journalists.

Wow. Well, man, tell us how you REALLY feel!

Insane

Posted by Paul on 7th October 2009

Watch a bit of this video… it’s a Turkish soccer club called Besiktas playing Manchester United, in Istanbul:

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ_oo2xbc2A&feature=player_embedded) if the movie doesn’t appear.)

Insane. Even the crazy soccer places like Scotland and England don’t often reach that height of chanting and cheering- it’s like every person in the crowd was going nuts for their team!

Even the Man U goalie said that it was incredibly loud:

… but Foster admits that communication was a problem as the home fans made Istanbul a fortress on the night.

“It was deafening,” said the 26-year-old. “I have never played in an atmosphere like it.

“There was a point in the second half when the fans were chanting and I couldn’t hear myself think.

“It is a bit of a frightening and disorientating experience. You cannot talk to your defenders and they cannot talk to each other.

“It is strange and hard. They were shouting things to me but I just told them there was no point because I couldn’t hear a thing.”

I dream of a day when it’s like that in Seattle. We don’t have to have the entire crowd that into it the entire game, but it’d be sweet if we could get it for a few minutes at a time as our most popular songs and chants start up.
