Almost perfect…

Here’s a contrast for you. On the day that Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run in the major leagues, moving ahead of Hank Aaron on the all-time HR list, a news story came out that Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was arranging to meet ex-Senator (that’s US Senator, not the old ballclub) George Mitchell, who’s wrapping up his investigation of… steroid use in baseball.
I don’t know quite what baseball should do, if anything, about Bonds. Everyone knows the guy was juiced up on roids during a good portion of the latter part of his career. But there’s some good counterpoints; many of the pitchers he was facing were ALSO using steroids. Does that make his steroid use less bad?
Hitting a baseball- particularly hitting homers- takes a lot of power. But it also takes a tremendous set of hand-eye coordination and other skills. They say that being a batter and hitting a baseball is the hardest regular task in sports; even the very best only do it successfully 35% of the time these days. Bonds is almost certainly clean the past year or two, and he’s still whacking ‘em over the fence.
All that said… I think he’s a dirty cheater and if I were the Commissioner, I’d say so. If I were a pitcher on an opposing team, I would not only never give him anything to hit, during his attempt at 755 and 756 I’d be throwing right at his friggin neck. Bonds is an asshole anyway.
BUUUUUT… luckily for MLB, I’m not a pitcher. (MLB would be a lot better off if I were the Commissioner, though.)
